Re: cost savings
Unfortunately, long term ROI is often sacrificed for shareholder returns, investments that don't yield returns for years into the future are often not powerful enough to command the attention of executives who worry about their own personal ROI to a company.

Re: cost savings
I am sure there would be a measurable ROI eventually it's the question of budget and investment for the utility companies.

Re: cost savings
@maryam:

If we think about all upfront infrastructure cost to replace with smart meters, that would be huge. But if we think about savings in long run we may hit a balance in future.

British Gas
in fact, British Gas aims to have smart meters in everyone's homes by 2020.....

Wow, this target for British gas seems to be pretty aggressive. Need to wait and see how this will turn out by that time.

Re: cost savings
Absolutely but it will take a greater investment in infrastructure to get rid of all those meters . The cost savings may long-term be great but in the short-term cost maybe significant .

@maryam@impact They are still everywhere! I'm surprised by this. Yes, electrical systems are complex. And utilities are slow to change. That being said, I think we're seeing that change because energy companies see the value smart meters can provide.

I still have one of those relics on my house and someone does still read it!  Smart energy could help businesses managing large data centers and consumers alike it could also help in the planning stages to assist businesses in planning locations that represent lower energy costs during their peak operating times..

In an industry where production yield and efficiency are tantamount to success, quickly identifying and correcting defects in the manufacturing process is critical. The customers of Optimal+ operate in production environments where errors related to yield and efficiency measurements can lead to losses of millions of dollars per year within a single plant. By implementing Vertica, Optimal+ is able to speed up analytical insights, combine data from different productions processes and gain visibility across the whole supply chain – leading to improved yield, quality and productivity for semiconductor and electronics manufacturers.

Join Alon Malki, Chief Architect at Optimal+, and Jeff Healey, Director of Product Marketing at HPE Vertica, to hear how advanced analytics and manufacturing intelligence can drive success in Industrial IoT. On this webinar you’ll learn:

  • Why HPE Vertica Analytics Platform is purpose built for IoT data
  • The challenges Optimal+ faced when developing a solution for IoT analytics
  • How Optimal+ leverages HPE Vertica to create an ideal big data architecture
