Re: Amazon's dominance?
@afwriter Pleased to hear Echo functions well in those areas. I'm glad I own one, if only so I have it as smart home devices become more commonplace and the prices drop!

Re: Amazon's dominance?
Anyone here know what speech tech powers Alexa? I think Siri uses Nuance's tech plus some customization. Is Alexa the same? Or does Amazon have its own speech tech like Google?

Re: Amazon's dominance?
@Ariella, good examples of its true virtual assistance capability.  The more uses the more the consumers will rely on it.  I believe it has great potential with its versatility.

Re: Amazon's dominance?
@mhhf1ve, like everything else with technology, people do not realize the functions the steps provide and believe they can do it another way, or forget, or never knew?

Apparently, not everyone bothers to set up their PIN?

Or are these "fake news" stories about kids ordering (and reports of the kids ordering ordering)..?

Re: Amazon's dominance?
@afwriter not for entertainment purposes, like activating music? You can also use it check on your sports teams, check on traffic, shop, and order pizza. Those are among the things listed here: http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/creative-uses-for-amazon-echo-and-alexa/

Re: Amazon's dominance?
I use my Echo to control lights in the house, the thermostat, and hopefully the blinds soon. I think it works pretty well and I look forward to seeing what else Amazon has in store.

Re: Amazon's dominance?
I would say it is on par with Siri, maybe a little better. My biggest issue is that it learns your speech patterns so if my 3-year-old talks to it for a while it doesn't always understand what I am saying.

Re: Amazon's dominance?
You have a pin number that you have to speak before it will order anything, making accidental ordering nearly impossible.

I use my echo as a hub for my home automation as well as an information center. I am sometimes amazed at what it can do.
