I think it happened during the first bubble & then after it burst. For a while it seemed like there was a shortage of talent so companies kept enticing employees to jump ship & work for them. And then once it burst, everyone understood the shorter time worked since it wasn't employees' faults for working at startups that didn't last.

The challenge is finding the companies that will be around long enough to let you be able to reach those heights. It doesn't matter how talented or loyal an employee is if they keep working for companies that fail (or get bought out).

That's good to know. That speaks volume that someone is really happy with the current job / role doing what they really like. That sense of satisfaction is very important. That surely will become a driving factor.

@faryl I remember when the shift began. Almost suddenly, it was ok to have multiple companies on a resume (at least in tech).

It used to be that having a bunch of companies on your resume would result in it being sent straight to the trashbin

This still is the case even today. A resume may not be preferred if there are multiple job chnages at frequent intervals.

 It is crazy that anyone stays with it longer than 7 years (on average).


I am in IT and I have experience working for start up companies. In my opinion one's ability to stay longer with start up companies depend on bunch of factors  -  the stage of your career at the time, affordability in terms of Job steability, readiness to adapt crazy schedules etc. No start up company gives you job steability or structure. You may have to wear may hats at times and be ready to spend extra hours. If you have flexibility to be around, there is a chance for one to reach good hights in the same start up company. I have seen some people doing that.

Some of the women on the team had not had a raise in 5 years while their male counterparts recieved yearly raises and bonuses.

This is so sad. I personally haven't experienced or witnessed such situation in my career. But I am aware that kind of discrimination exists in industry.

I agree it's about infrastructure, until companies build an infrastructure that accommodates families women will leave the workforce. Those able to stay are typically blessed with a personal support structure that enables them to stay in their careers.
